Better Birth Outcomes-Comprehensive

Our Better Birth Outcomes-Comprehensive Program (BBO-C) targets high risk pregnant and postpartum women and infants who are identified throughout our community in Mason County. Participants in this program receive prenatal, postpartum, and interconceptual health education. Clients are referred to our agency by other social service agencies, physician offices, and other departments within the Mason County Health Department.

BBO-C Qualifying Risk Factors

• Less than 12 months since last pregnancy ended
• Use of tobacco, marijuana, alcohol, or other drugs, or treatment for Opioid Use Disorder within the past 6 months
• Previous fetal or infant loss (20 weeks or later), premature birth (36 weeks or earlier), or low birth weight (less than 5lb 8oz)
• Certain medical conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, sickle cell disease, cardiomyopathy, hepatitis B or C, or a history of blood clots
• Pregnancy complications including preeclampsia/eclampsia, abnormal placenta placement, or significant bleeding requiring a blood transfusion
• Less than 18 or more than 34 years of age
• Active, untreated sexually transmitted infection (STI)
• Multiple gestation (twins or greater)
• Pre-pregnancy BMI of less than 18.5 or more than 40
• Significant medical or pregnancy complications during a previous pregnancy
• Mental health condition requiring medication
• Developmental delay
• Frequent hospital or ER/urgent care visits (3+ in the past 6-12 months)

BBO-C Program Overview

The BBO-C program provides prenatal health education, linkage to and coordination of care with primary and specialty medical care and other social services, referrals to our free childbirth education and parenting classes, access to contraceptive services and overall care coordination to pregnant women with risk factors that lead to poor birth outcomes. Participants have 2 or more monthly contacts with the RN case manager. Goals of the program are to: 1) Decrease the incidence of infant mortality and morbidity resulting from lack of adequate prenatal care; 2) Improve pregnancy outcomes; and 3) Reduce the incidence of prematurity and low birth weight.
