What Is Fluoride Varnish?
Fluoride varnish is a thin coating containing 5% sodium fluoride that is brushed directly onto the surfaces of the teeth. It sets quickly when it comes into contact with saliva and helps protect teeth from decay. During the application, your child can sit on your lap while a small brush is used to apply the varnish to their teeth. The application only takes a few minutes.
As the varnish gradually releases fluoride, it helps strengthen tooth enamel and repair early damage before it develops into a cavity.
Fluoride varnish can:
– help prevent new cavities from forming
– help stop early tooth decay from getting worse
– strengthen and protect developing teeth
– provide protection that lasts for several months
Fluoride varnish can begin when your child’s first tooth appears, and should be provided no later than 12 months of age. It can be repeated as needed, up to four times per year.
Is Fluoride Varnish Safe?
Yes. Fluoride varnish is safe for babies and young children. Only a very small amount is used, and the varnish quickly sticks to the teeth. This minimizes the amount of fluoride that can be swallowed.
Why Is Fluoride Important?
Cavities are the most common chronic disease of childhood, but they are largely preventable. Children who do not have regular access to dental care may be at greater risk for cavities. Fluoride is a safe, affordable, and effective way to protect teeth before and after they emerge. Starting good oral health habits early helps give children a healthy foundation for a lifetime of taking care of their teeth.
